Margaret "Sally" Barter Kelly (81) passed away on March 8, (her favorite number) at the Holiday in Lincoln RI.

She was the wife of the late John A "Grumpy" Kelly. Sally and John were residents of Lincoln, and previously Central Falls. Born in Gloversville, NY, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Margaret (Smith) Barter.

Sally earned her BSN from SUNY Plattsburgh in upstate NY, and her MSN from URI, she was a Professor of Nursing at the Community College of Rhode Island for over 30 years, educating generations of nursing students. As a result, it was nearly impossible to enter a hospital with Sally without running into one or more of her former students. She found joy in the simple things in life, her grandchildren, a good book, shopping, yard sales, taking midday naps while watching golf, making new friends wherever she went, enjoying the holidays with family, vacations visiting family, dining at her favorite restaurants, a nice bowl of HOT soup, March madness, Gladiolas and Hyacinths.

Sally was a devout Catholic, active with the PTA at St. Matthew’s-Notre Dame, a member of the parish council, and a Eucharistic minister at Notre Dame parish.

She is survived by her daughters Deb and husband John Matteson, and PJ (Peggy) and husband Steve Johnson. She was Nana to Casey McGuire and Andrew Matteson and his wife Hillary. She was “Nana Kelly” to two great grandchildren, Abby and Murphy. Sally also leaves her brother Russell Barter and his wife Mary (New York), and brother-in-law Edward Gangarosa (New York), sister-in-law Maureen Gomes, brother-in-law Anthony Favata. As well as many nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by her sister Ellen Gangarosa (New York), sister-in-law Dolores Kelly, brother-in-law John Gomes, and sister-in-law Bernadette Favata.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place, at St. Jude’s Church 301 Front St. Lincoln, RI 02865 at 10am on Monday, March 11th. Please go directly to the church.
